Deck Out Your Lanai

Deck Out Your Lanai

Florida is home to gorgeous sunsets, balmy breezes, and many months of very livable outdoor patio weather. Compared to the national average Floridians and our beloved visiting snowbirds alike spend a lot more time on their lanais and patio areas than most of the rest of the country.

This is why when designing a new home it is an area that is important to really give some thought too rather than dismiss as “just the lanai”.

How will you live in the space? Will you entertain? Will you lounge, and listen to music or read? Will your kids or pets be joining you? Will you incorporate a pool or hot tub or other water features? Will you cook outdoors? How many people will you need to comfortably seat?

These are just a few of the things that need to be considered when drawing up plans.

Gone are the days of the lanai just simply being a flat encased or open space where homeowners popped up a few foldable lawn chairs. Comfort, convenience, and style reign here.

Let’s take a look at some of the amazing ways you can make the most of your backyard space turning it into your own private oasis and escape from the world.

Figuring out what you want to include will also help you gauge the square footage you want to build on. Once the size is chosen, you can then begin to map out your lanai.

Here is a list of considerations and possible inclusions:

  1. Cooking- If you plan on BBQing outdoors installing a cook center with a grill and even a range hood can serve you and your guests well for years to come.
  2. Time of day- Will you be out there at night - Lighting is very important. Wall sconces are a great choice for lanai areas, they add eye-level light and can cast beautiful light striations on the walls for an artistic look. Overhead lights are great for general lighting and if you can set them on a dimmer, even better to be able to control the ambiance.
  3. Water features - Many love a pool installation, but if you are not in the market for a full pool you may also want to consider a lap pool or a jacuzzi - they are great for your health and make for a beautiful addition. In pool or spa lighting should be given thought to as well.
  4. Fireplace - Even here in SW Florida it is cool enough many nights to get a fire going.
  5. Sitting areas - dining and lounging, as well as TV viewing, may be considerations.
  6. Textures - what texture flooring will you use? - non-slip, heat resistant, smooth - its very much personal choice.
  7. A Bar - if you entertain building in a bar area can prove priceless. A mini fridge or wine cooler, as well as a sink area, can save many trips in and out of the house during a party or gathering.
  8. Reading area - If you plan on reading make sure to get a good reading lamp and draw in a socket for the plug near where you think the chairs will be. This can eliminate unsightly and dangerous cords.
  9. Kids play area or space for pet beds or crates - this may seem insignificant until you are hosting a party and tripping over kids or dogs.
