It used to be that most homes here in the United States had a den or study. These days with computers, lap tops, and other mobile devices many of us work from other areas of the house including the living room, kitchen and even in our bedrooms. Generally, we choose wherever we are the most comfortable and the least disturbed.
So are people still building dens? The answer is that the old style den has taken on a new title “ManCave” or in some cases “SheCave”, which are the updated versions for today.
What’s the difference:
Old style Dens - had all of the basics, sofa, tables, desk, conversation area, lamps, shelves for books and trinkets and likely a television.
Man Cave of Today - Much more elaborate… lazy boy recliners, comfy couches, bar inclusions, game tables, flat screen wall mounted TV’s, computer areas, collectibles, art on the walls that may not be appropriate for other areas of the home, sports memorabilia, dart board, hobby use and storage areas, extra refrigerator, the design is generally aimed at being fun and function over going with and staying in the structure of the design of the rest of the home. Mancaves are used as a place to play, unwind and escape.
These areas can double as guest rooms for overnight visitors and relatives as well as work areas for projects and work taken home from the office. Man caves are a great investment not only in your own life but for future resale - they allow your home to stand out in a sea of listings drawing potential buyers and getting them in the door to view your home possibly over another of the same size and price because it has more appeal.
