Window Styles to Consider for Your Home

Window Styles to Consider for Your Home

Windows on a home can be both functional and pleasing to the eye. There are many different shapes and styles to select from. Take into account the room and how you will be using it. Do you need a lot of natural light? Then, a larger picture window is the best option. Do you need a functioning window that can open and close to allow the outside air and temperature to enter your home? Then, a casement window might be what you need. Think through each room and the style that you want to convey. We have listed different types of windows below that you might want to consider.

  • Single hung windows open by sliding the bottom panel up. The top window is stationary and does not slide.
  • Double hung windows are a very common type. You can open this window by either sliding the top down or the bottom up.
  • Stationary windows are great if you would like very large windows, picture windows, that do not open. These are perfect for allowing a lot of natural light into a room and maximizes the view to the outside.
  • Transom windows are the smaller windows above other windows or doors. Normally, these are positioned high on the wall and are used to allow in extra light, so window coverings are not necessarily needed. Transoms can be built in many different shapes such as half round, elliptical, triangle and eyebrow, to add interest to the room. The majority of transoms are stationary, but they can be built to open if you desire.
  • Casement windows are opened with the turn of a crank handle. They can open either to the left or right and normally open outwards.
  • Bay windows add a design element to a room. They also create more living space. These are placed in dining areas of a kitchen to accommodate a table or a bedroom to create a sitting area. Single hung, double hung, stationary, and casement type functions can be applied.
  • Awning windows are hinged on the top and open outwards from the bottom. Most of these are a louvered style, which adds the charm of a cottage or beach house.
  • Slider windows slide to either the right or left within the sash of the window frame. They do not protrude out or inside of the home.

Selecting the type of window style is a personal preference and also can be determined by the room in which you are designing. Careful planning of the use of the room will help tremendously in your decision.
